Nicaragua. On the way up the mountain to Jinotega's high altitude coffee-growing region is a statue of an ancient king in a tiny park. The longer we look at the statue, the more we wonder what the king is holding in his hands. Sloths slowly climb in the trees overhead. A guardabarranco bird makes its loud, distinctive call. Several people enjoy the weather in the park and an elderly gentleman stands nearby, also studying the statue. He wears a white, lightweight suit and summer hat. We ask him about what the king holds.
"Señor," he said. "es una taza de café." Translation: It's a cup of coffee. But this is Jinotega and that makes sense.
